On the way out
of the town of Chios and with final destination the monastery of Nea Moni,
we come to a rather newly-built monastery of Virgin Mary, named "Voithia"
(Holy Help) founded in 1925.
The nuns in it make wonderful craftworks and
embroidered pieces.
A little further up, the road crosses
Karyes village (at 6 Km from Chora).
It is a beautiful amphitheatrically built
village with a population of 700 residents. In the
village there is plenty of cool water and in the center of the village
under the coolness of the plane and walnut trees the visitor can enjoy the
local delicacies with ouzo or drink a Byzantine coffee.
The village is famous for its panoramic views to
Chios, Kampos and the shores of Asia Minor opposite.
Every year the festivals of the Churches of
Theotokos and of Santa Markella during the summer are full of people.
The residents are breeders, merchants,
construction workers and civil servants.
Leaving behind us the village of Karyes and from
that point on, there are continual forests of pine trees on the Provation
mount.
Now, a small monastery exists there, founded in 1700 with later
extensions built around it.
Inside the monastery there is the burial ground of Parthenios, founder
of the monastery.
Further on, to the west, at about the middle of the island, is Nea Moni,
about 15 Km from Chora.
