In about 1840, because of a big storm, in the sea area opposite to the location where today is situated the church of
Panagia
Moutsena, the cluster of Secondary Education buildings and the Homeroupolis Town hall, a sailing ship was wrecked and all his crew was lost except one, a little deck boy, who was rescued and brought with him a small icon of Virgin Mary.
So, in those days, by the Chian syrian captain Papa and other Chian captains, who made all possible efforts, there was built, in the most close to the ship wreck place, a church that was named Panagia Moutsena -from the rescued deck boy with the icon or Nautili, as a seamen's
protector.
With the earthquake of 1881 this church was partially destroyed and repaired at the expenses of the parishioners.
Today's church was built in the early fifties at the same place where the old church was. |
